Originally from Cincinnati, OH, Dr. Johnson completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Virginia, then went on to medical school at the University of Toledo. He completed an internship in General Surgery at the Medical University of South Carolina, followed by an ophthalmology residency at the renowned Storm Eye Institute-MUSC in Charleston, SC. Dr. Johnson also received advanced training in vision correction surgery with several of the field’s most notable pioneers. Additionally, he holds a healthcare-focused MBA from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, which undergirds his commitment to improving the delivery of health care through patient-centered processes.
Since beginning practice in Wilmington in 2005, Dr. Johnson has treated tens of thousands of patients, yet he still celebrates every successful patient outcome as if it’s the first. He is the first and only surgeon in Southeastern North Carolina to perform topography-guided LASIK, an exceptionally customized treatment which addresses over 20,000 micro-prescriptions within each eye. He is also the first and only surgeon in Southeastern North Carolina to utilize the LENSAR ALLY Adaptive Laser Cataract system, the world’s most advanced laser for precise, customized cataract procedures.
Dr. Johnson was one of the first surgeons in the Carolinas to utilize SLT laser as first-line glaucoma therapy for the reduction or elimination of eye drops. He was also one of the first surgeons in the Carolinas to perform Laser Floater Treatment for the reduction or elimination of bothersome eye floaters, and he remains one of the region’s most experienced surgeons in these technologies. Dr. Johnson’s passion for bringing visual freedom to his patients, utilizing groundbreaking technology, forms the essence of our practice.
Dr. Johnson is an active member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, the International Society of Refractive Surgery, the North Carolina Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons, the North Carolina Medical Society, and the New Hanover/ Pender County Medical Society.
Dr. Johnson currently serves on the Board of Directors for Prevent Blindness North Carolina, which is dedicated to preserving sight through direct service, education, and advocacy. As a fluent Spanish speaker with a love of Latin America, he has participated in several medical mission trips to Central and South America. Most recently, he and his wife were part of an eye surgery project near the border of Colombia and Venezuela, working with a team which cared for over 4,000 patients and performed nearly 200 vision-restoring eye surgeries.
In his free time, Dr. Johnson enjoys traveling and new adventures with his wife, Roulhac, who is also our long-term Practice Administrator. He loves to play golf with his athletic 17-year-old son, and to spend time hanging out with his beautiful and amazing 15-year-old daughter. He is also an avid kitesurfer, runner, and weightlifter.
